[Buying advice] Best place to buy a second hand watch

2015.03.16 23:22 Witty_Comment [Buying advice] Best place to buy a second hand watch

Hey Guys, I'm just about to buy my first serious watch (probably a Omega Speedmaster), but due to budget, I'll be buying second hand. I'm going to stay away from eBay if I'm spending a few grand, but where do you buy second hand from? I'm tempted to use Watchfinder (www.watchfinder.co.uk), but I'm not sure how much of a premium I'd be paying for the security of them having checked it. Would I be better off just going to a jeweller or pawn shop? Thanks!

2014.12.26 09:54 NoobieDevYo [OMEGA] After days of research, I think I've found a good pre-owned, starter luxury watch for my SO (under 500 USD). I'd appreciate some comments. Thanks!

For Christmas (I know it's the 26th but I've been studying up on watches), I wanted to give my SO a luxury watch she could wear during official functions (business meetings, etc.) So I've been browsing eBay and I've settled on a Stainless Steel, Quartz, OMEGA Seamaster 120M, with an option to buy for a little below 500USD.
Based on what I've read so far, the price may be a bit steep for a Ladies Watch with a Quartz movement. I know the general sentiment about quartz in this sub. However, in addition to the limited choices based on my budget), she has already made it clear that she prefers not having to do the maintenance a mechanical/ automatic watch requires.
The 3 things worrying me are:
  1. I couldn't find the serial on Omega's Vintage Watch Database (I did however, find it on other online retailers: http://www.prestigetime.com/item/Omega/Seamaster-120m/2581.31.html & http://www.watchfinder.co.uk/Model?id=929).
  2. Finding out it's only worth 50USD (paying a bit more is fine, but finding out I paid 500% more would be dissapointing). From what I've seen online, the retail price is around 1000-1200 USD.
  3. There's no picture of the movement (which is supposed to be "standard"). Or is it because it's Quartz?
The auction ends in 12 hours and after cramming a lot of research the past few days, I though I'd give this sub a shot. Thanks in advance!
